Our member of the month for June is Rosemary Slaven
“In September of 2016 I was sitting in a doctor’s office bawling. I’d just been told that there was really nothing that could be done for my osteoarthritis other than pain meds, anti-inflammatories, and the promise of a joint replacement in a few years. I weighed over 100kg and was in constant pain. I was dependent on medication and just getting out of a chair hurt. I decided then that this was no way to live so I pulled my finger out and made major changes in my life.
The first year, I walked every day, got my eating under control and lost over 30kg. The following year I joined the GHRC and from those first few classes, I was hooked. I can’t begin to describe what a positive effect this wonderful club has had on my life. It is truly my happy place. The support, encouragement, camaraderie, and laughs are just the best. I have achieved so much over the last few years. I initially stuck mainly to Pump, RPM and Sprint but have now branched out into the Outdoor X classes and have noticed a real improvement in my fitness. I certainly don’t win any speed records and there are still some moves that I just can’t do but there are always alternatives.
Sometimes the joints complain in the mornings and it takes me a little longer to warm up but I rarely need to take medication now. I think that now in my late 50’s, I’m in the best shape that I’ve ever been and I have everyone at GHRC to thank for that. I’m so passionate about the benefits of exercise even with chronic health conditions. It makes such a difference. Life has thrown a few curve balls at me in the last 12 months and it’s been a struggle at times but being part of the GHRC family has really helped to keep me sane.
Thanks guys, you’re the best.”
